Melbourne further ahead of Sydney in new air passenger numbers

MELBOURNE - Melbourne Airport has edged further ahead of Sydney Airport in 2014, delivering more than half a million additional passengers than did Sydney Airport over the 12 months. Melbourne Airport international passenger growth was double that of Sydney for 2014.

International passengers were up 8.5% in Melbourne and 2.8% in Sydney, while domestic passengers grew by 2.2% in Melbourne and 1.0% in Sydney respectively.

On a year-on-year comparison, December 2014 at Melbourne Airport saw international traffic grew by 4.3%, almost doubling growth at Sydney of 2.3%. And while China traffic was strong in both Melbourne and Sydney for the month, the strength of the Melbourne market was proved yet again with China market traffic growing at 24.5% while Sydney was 18.1%.
