ASEAN+3 leaders promise co-operation on sustainable development

VIENTIANE - The 10 member States of ASEAN plus China, South Korea and Japan (ASEAN + 3) have promised to work together to promote co-operation on sustainable development. In a statement, their leaders reaffirmed a commitment to implement the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development adopted last year at the UN Sustainable Development Summit in New York, and the Paris Agreement adopted at the 2015 UN Climate Change Conference.

Singapore’s SGX joins UN Sustainable Stock Exchanges Initiative

SINGAPORE – The Singapore Stock Exchange has become a member of the UN Sustainable Stock Exchanges (SSE) Initiative at the initiative’s Fifth Global Dialogue here. It joins 58 others, including the London and New York exchanges, in the SSE, a UN initiative that encourages sustainable investment and enhanced environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG).

Vietnam approves 2016-2020 investment plan for 21 big State-level programmes

HANOI – The Vietnamese Government has approved an investment plan for 21 major State-level programmes targetting economic priorities for the 2016-2020 period. These include sustainable development for rural areas and agriculture; upgrading  of infrastructure, especially for economic zones and industrial parks; dealing with climate change and environmental protection; and improving education access and electricity distribution for rural and remote areas.

China’s August imports lifted by stronger domestic demand

HONG KONG – China’s August trade data surprised the market on the upside. The biggest surprise was import growth, which rebounded to 1.5% y-o-y in USD terms, the first positive reading in well over a year. Domestic demand, including demand for commodities, rebounded strongly, likely as a result of robust infrastructure investment growth over the past months, says HSBC.

Demand for air cargo strengthened in July

GENEVA - The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has released data for global air freight markets in July 2016 showing robust growth in demand. Measured in freight tonne kilometres (FTKs), demand increased 5.0% in July 2016, compared to July 2015, the fastest pace in almost 18 months. Freight capacity measured in available freight tonne kilometres (AFTKs) increased by 5.2% on-year, outstripping demand and keeping yields under pressure.

RMIT students win Asia-Pacific studies through New Colombo Plan funding

SYDNEY - More than 200 RMIT students will undertake won overseas study programmes and internships in China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Samoa, South Korea, Thailand and Vietnam, thanks to funding from the Australian Government’s New Colombo Plan. The funding is for outbound mobility programs to the Asia Pacific for three years from 2017.
