North Korea to send delegation, athletes to South Korean Games

January 9, 2018

SEOUL – According to South Korean officials, North Korea today agreed to send a delegation, including athletes, officials and supporters to the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in Pyongyang in February. Delegations from the two countries met today at the Peace House of Panmunjom in what were the first high-level talks between them for more than two years.

Confirmation of today’s talks came on January 5 from South Korea’s Ministry of Unification spokesperson, Baik Tae Hyun, who told a regular press briefing: “Today, North Korea sent a notice at 10:16 a.m. in regard to the proposal for high-level talks.”

He said the notice from the North was sent in the name of Ri Son Gwon, Chairman of the North Korean Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Fatherland.

In the missive, North Korea accepted South Korea’s proposal to hold high-level talks on January 9 at the Peace House, talks that Seoul had proposed on January 2. The Ministry spokesperson added that the two sides had agreed to discuss further details for the talks through the exchange of documents.
