India sets tea production record, exports up 17% in 2015-16

KOLKATA - India produced of 1,233 million kg of tea during the financial year 2015-16, the highest total recorded and 35.96 million kg or 3% more than in the previous year. Indian tea achieved another milestone during 2015-16 with registered export figures of 232.92 million kg valued at Rs. 4493.10 crore, topping the 230 million kg mark for the first time in 35 years.

Compared to financial year 2014-15, tea exports increased by 33.84 million kg (17%), while in value terms, the increase was Rs. 669.46 crore (17.51%). Higher tea exports were mainly to Russia, Iran, Germany, Pakistan, Bangladesh, the UAE and Poland.
The increase in tea production was mainly in North India where production was up by 52.74 million kgs (5.52%). Production in South India declined by 16.78 million kg (-6.95%) due to adverse climatic conditions and labour issues in Kerala. (ATI).
