China to fast-track 5G development to crank up economy in face of COVID-19

March 9, 2020

BEIJING - China' s three major telecom operators have told a symposium that more than 550,000 5G base stations are expected to be put into operation nationwide by the end of this year - and that 80% of the country's 5G network construction was on schedule in the first two months of 2020.

China' s State newsagency, Xinhua, reported that the symposium was told China would quicken development of 5G technology to crank up the economic engine in the battle against the novel coronavirus outbreak.

Xinhua quoted Chen Zhaoxiong, China' s Vice Minister of Industry and Information Technology, as saying 5G technology played an important role, not only in epidemic control and work resumption but in promoting investment, consumption and economic upgrading.
