Vietnam Airlines opens direct services to United States

November 29, 2021

HO CHI MINH CITY --  Vietnam Airlines today completed its first direct commercial flight to the United States -- from Ho Chi Minh City to San Francisco -- fulfilling a key development milestone. The historic flight recognised a 20-year-effort by Vietnam Airlines since the establishment of its representative office in San Francisco to lay foundations for a direct route between the two countries.

Initially, Vietnam Airlines has scheduled two flights weekly from Ho Chi Minh City to San Francisco, to be increased to seven weekly after the COVID-19 pandemic is under control. It plans a second route to connect Los Angeles to Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

Bilateral trade turnover between Vietnam and the U.S. has increased about 200-fold, from US$451 million in 1995 to US$90.8 billion in 2020.

Vietnam Airlines - a member of SkyTeam Alliance - is the major carrier in Southeast Asia, operating 95 routes to 22 domestic and 29 international destinations with an average of 400 flights per day. Skytrax has ranked Vietnam Airlines as a 4-Star Airline for four consecutive years.
