Macao joins Hong Kong in closing Taiwan representative office

June 16, 2021

TAIPEI -- Macao's representative office in Taiwan, the Macao Economic and Cultural Office, on Wednesday announced the indefinite suspension of its operations from May 19, but gave no reason for the decision.

The Macao Special Administrative Region (MSAR) Government said the MSAR would continue to look after the needs of Macao residents in Taiwan through a 24-hour telephone hotline set up by the Macao Government Tourism Office.

The Hong Kong Economic, Trade and Cultural Office (HKETCO) in Taiwan suspended operations on May 18.

Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council (MAC), which is in charge of cross-strait affairs, on Wednesday expressed "deep regret" over the move, which it described as unilaterally made by the MSAR.

It said Taiwan's office in Macao would continue to operate. (ATI).
